How to Add Users to Your Home Security System
Whether you are using your laptop or the mobile app, follow these easy steps to add security users.
- The first thing you want to do is log onto Alarm.com by entering your username and password.
- After you’re logged on, click the Menu icon in the top left and click the tab that says “users.”
- Click on Add New User.
- Enter the person’s first and last name. Then click the “Create” button.
- Click the Access Code Box to enter a 4-digit code for the new user. There is also the option of randomly creating a new code using the Generate Code button.
- Enable or disable access for panels and locks for the user’s code.
- Press the “save” button. Give the security system a few minutes to activate the user code. If the new user code does not work after a few minutes, call your service provider.
You can also add the user’s contact information by tapping +Add Contact. You can insert their email address, mobile number or both.
You can do this process on your laptop and through the mobile app.
How to Change or Update Users
If you want to change or delete a user from your security system, you can do so by following these steps:
- Log onto alarm.com.
- Click the Menu icon and click the “users” tab.
- Choose the user from the list who want to change or remove.
- Select “delete” to remove them or press “edit” to modify the user.
- If you are deleting a user, a pop up will appear to confirm the deletion.
You can also remove a user’s access:
- Follow 1 and 2 above.
- Click the “edit” button to have the user’s access removed.
- Find the Access Control panel and click to uncheck the access points to remove access.
- Press the “save” button.
As stated above, you can do this process on your laptop or using the mobile app.
User Code Best Practices

User alarm codes activate and deactivate home security systems. One of the best things you can do to protect your home is to change alarm codes every year.
Most people create a code that is familiar to them, but that is risky. It’s best to pick a random number. If you need to remember it, you can write it down, memorize it and then destroy it. And make sure everyone who needs access knows the code.
You can also use Two Factor Authentication. This is an electronic authentication method that grants access to applications after presenting two or more pieces of evidence. This provides extra protection and makes it harder for intruders to access your system.

Whenever you login from a new device, Alarm.com will ask for your password first. Then you’ll receive a text message with a one-time code to officially access your account. After entering your password, you’ll get a text message with a one-time code that you’ll need to complete your login.
