Protecting Your Lowcountry Business 101: Security System Maintenance & Aftercare
May 8, 2025Your Small Business Security Starter Kit: Here’s Where To Get Started To Keep Your Small Business Protected In The Lowcountry

Charleston is a fantastic place to own and operate a small business.
From its fantastic views, history and metro areas, it’s easy to see why it continues to be one of the fastest growing metro areas in the United States.
No matter where your small business calls home, however, your to-do is likely never ending.
Something on that never-ending list that many small business owners may look over, though, is security.
Not getting the right business security (or right security team) for protection can mean leaving their business vulnerable to theft and other property crime in the Lowcountry.
It can be difficult to know where to start when it comes to building the perfect small business security system, so to help you out, below are some really simple steps you can follow to get your business investment safe this year.
1. Start Simple
One of the most simple and effective things you can start with is checking on your physical security.
Things like deadbolts, door locks, window locks, safes and other physical security mechanisms are often the foundation of a proper small business security system.
2. Establish A Base Security System
Next up, you’re going to want to get your small business equipped with a standard/basis electronic security system.
This is typically a keypad/panel combo device – that serves as the “brains” of the system, and includes some wireless window/door sensors and a motion detector.
This will have to be customized based on your location’s particular needs, but it’s a great base for the rest of your security system.
3. Additional Devices & Cameras
If your location requires additional coverage, there are even more device options available – including glass break detectors and even panic buttons.
On top of the additional devices, having a security camera system installed adds even more value to your system — allowing you to keep an eye on your location, staff, vendors and anyone else that is on-site at your business while you’re away.
4. Level Up With Access Control
To put your security system over the top, an access control system can allow you to definitively control who can (and more importantly – who shouldn’t) access your small business location and even individual areas (think manager’s office).
There are a variety of access control systems available, but the basic setup is:
- Creating a list of who needs access to your business
- Creating a schedule of when they need access
- Granting access (typically through a mobile app)
As each person needs access to your location, they can use their app to unlock doors and disarm alarm systems so they can safely enter.
Coupled with your security cameras and burglar alarm, an access control system creates an incredibly robust security system for your small business.
5. Create A Security Maintenance Schedule
As always with any kind of system, maintenance is important.
Cleaning up access lists (adding/removing codes), keeping sensors and cameras clean, testing your burglar alarm system and general device checks are some of the things you can add to your maintenance list.
If you’re short on time, you can also schedule your local security team to help – they have the tools and experience to identify any faults in your system and get them corrected.
Owning a small business is a challenge – and a journey.
Keeping your small business secure is just another step in that journey, but with a little help from your local, professional security crew, you can rest a little better at night, knowing you’re keeping your investment protected in the Lowcountry.
